Canvas Printing vs Paper Printing: Which Should You Choose?

Sep 4, 2026

Canvas printing and paper printing can both look beautiful, but they create very different finished pieces. The best choice depends on the artwork, the room, the level of detail, and how you want the final piece to feel.

Choose paper for detail and flexibility

Paper is usually the best choice when fine detail, clean borders, matting, or traditional framing matters. Photo paper can create crisp images with a matte or lustre finish. Fine art paper can add a premium cotton feel, with smooth or textured surfaces depending on the piece.

Paper is also versatile. It can be framed with a mat, displayed in a portfolio, packaged flat, or sold as an edition.

Choose canvas for texture and presence

Canvas has a thicker profile because it is stretched over a frame. That depth gives it more object presence on the wall. Matte canvas creates a softer, quieter finish, while satin canvas adds a little more richness and contrast.

Canvas works well for painterly images, large wall pieces, home decor, and artwork that benefits from texture and dimension.

What about framing?

Paper prints are often framed behind glass or acrylic with a mat. Stretched canvas can hang on its own, or it can be placed in a floater frame for a more elevated look.

At 905Print, we offer paper printing, fine art printing, canvas printing, and custom framing, so we can help you choose the format that suits the image. Explore canvas printing or compare fine art papers.
